Embodied listening, affordances and Performing with Computers

چکیده
I consider here some contemporary approaches to the live performance of computer music. Drawing upon ideas of the embodied mind and the extended mind, I will outline a theory of embodied listening which problematises some of our assumptions about music, gesture and performance. Against the background of this theory, I will argue against approaches which put too great a focus upon gestural legibility in when design new computer-based instruments. I will consider a diverse array of practices in contemporary instrument design which do not necessarily adopt principles of gestural legibility, and challenge some of our ideas about what instruments and musical performance should be. I draw upon the notion of affordances, and argue in favour of an approach to computer based instrument design which seeks to explore the unique affordances and singular possibilities we find in new technologies.

Communicating and Acting: Understanding Gesture in Simulation Semantics
In this paper, we introduce an architecture for multimodal communication between humans and computers engaged in a shared task. We describe a representative dialogue between an artificial agent and a human that will be demonstrated live during the presentation. This assumes a multimodal environment and semantics for facilitating communication and interaction with a computational agent. To this ...
متن کاملAffordances and limitations of technology: Voices from EFL teachers and learners
With the developments of new technologies appearing very quickly, the attention has been focused more on technology than learning. English centers and institutes have mostly been busy accommodating new programs and technologies and hence have not spent enough time to evaluate the CALL programs and technologies employed to find their affordances and limitations. The present study was an attempt ...
متن کاملExploring the Multi-Layered Affordances of Composing and Performing Interactive Music with Responsive Technologies
The question motivating the work presented here, starting from a view of music as embodied and situated activity, is how can we account for the complexity of interactive music performance situations. These are situations in which human performers interact with responsive technologies, such as sensor-driven technology or sound synthesis affected by analysis of the performed sound signal. This re...
متن کاملSimultaneous Speech and Gesture Generation in Embodied Conversational Agents
Embodied conversational agent systems are computer interfaces represented by lifelike human or animal characters that are capable of performing believable actions and reacting to human users. Such systems may allow humans to communicate with computers naturally and easily. Humans have long years of practicing communication with other humans, and thus need little training to
متن کاملContinuous Theta Burst Stimulation (cTBS) on Left Cerebellar Hemisphere Affects Mental Rotation Tasks during Music Listening
Converging evidence suggests an association between spatial and music domains. A cerebellar role in music-related information processing as well as in spatial-temporal tasks has been documented. Here, we investigated the cerebellar role in the association between spatial and musical domains, by testing performances in embodied (EMR) or abstract (AMR) mental rotation tasks of subjects listening ...
